New library a hit with the Ipswich community

The new Rosewood Library has proven popular with the Ipswich community, with more than 300 new members since its opening in late July.

The newest Ipswich Libraries branch saw more than 5,500 visitors in its first five weeks of operation, with more than 6,000 items loaned during the same period.

With a 27,000-item-strong collection, Rosewood Library is now averaging around 169 visitors and 205 loans a day.

Division 4 Councillor Kate Kunzelmann said the library’s popularity was due to its unique offerings.

“We’re on a mission to reinvent libraries in Ipswich; they’re no longer simply houses for books,” Cr Kunzelmann said.

“Rosewood Library is filled with innovation and technology, and it’s no surprise its makerspace has become an instant hit with the younger crowd, with many visiting the library on weekends to use the virtual reality experience, interactive table and hologram table.

“The library also pays homage to the region’s rich heritage which helps people connect with the space, with the local history room generating plenty of interest from the community.

“The community is keen on exploring the current collection in the local history room, but they’re also seeking to add their own family history which makes it a very special feature.”

Division 4 Councillor Russell Milligan said despite COVID-19 restrictions, interest in Rosewood Library’s services and programming was increasing.

“The Rosewood Library team has been connecting with various community groups including child care centres, aged care homes and schools, who are keen to find out more about the services and programs they can access via the library,” Cr Milligan said.

“While its public programming has been limited due to COVID-19, we’ve been able to recommence some events such as the First Five Forever story times, which have all been fully booked.”

Cr Milligan said the library was specifically designed to keep pace with the changing needs of the Ipswich community.

“The Rosewood Library was designed with our contemporary way of life in mind, giving our community modern and innovative ways of accessing council services, including Council Connect which is averaging around 20 customer enquiries each week,” Cr Milligan said.

Rosewood Library is located on the corner of John and Railway streets. Find out more at
